Jerry garcia and merl saunders a long strange trip

In 1986 Garcia fell into a five-day diabetic coma and was forced to relearn the guitar. He began seeing another woman, Manasha Matheson, resulting in the birth of his fourth child, daughter Keelin Noel Garcia, born in 1987. He remained relatively healthy for about two years but relapsed on heroin in 1989, again attempting treatment. He and Matheson remained together until 1993; however, Garcia began seeing another woman briefly and soon reunited with Koons, whom he married on February 14, 1994.

Johnny Markowski , an accomplished drummer, can be found playing his kit these days with The New Riders of the Purple Sage. When not on the road with The NRPS, Johnny works with his band, Stir Fried, and plays with various artists in many styles. Songwriting is also in his blood.  His father, Thomas Jefferson Kaye, was a legendary producer and songwriter in the 1960s and 1970s.  Markowski’s band, Stir Fried, known for its blend of swamp groove, psychedelic improvisational music performs signature versions of Kaye masterpieces in addition to Markowski originals.  The group has recorded and performed with the likes of Dr. John, Vassar Clements (Old & In The Way), Commander Cody, Buddy Cage (NRPS), Jo Jo Herman (Widespread Panic), Bernie Worrell (P Funk, Talking Heads), Derek Trucks (Allman Bros. Band) and Tony Trischka. Recently held a contest for the most impressive drummer/percussionist, and after two weeks of voting Markowski won hands down, beating out some pretty heavy competition.

Sally Mann Romano is an attorney in her native Texas. In the 1960s she was not a lawyer but sometimes needed lawyering-up after one of her several—make that myriad—associations with rock stars. No one remembers the day more colorfully. Her book, The Band’s With Me, with a foreword by Grace Slick, will be published by Jorvik Press in 2016.

The lineup for the version of the Garcia/Saunders band featured on GarciaLive Volume Nine is filled out with Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann , multi-instrumentalist Martin Fierro and bassist John Kahn . Included on the two-CD release are renditions of The Band’s “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” Jimmy Cliff’s “The Harder They Come” and Thigpen/Marion/Banks’ “That’s What Love Will Make You Do” as well as a take on Fierro’s “La La.” Listen to “The Harder They Come” off GarciaLive Volume Nine , which was premiered by Relix :

Correction: The original version of this piece misstated the date of the concert at the Old Renaissance Faire Grounds. It took place on Aug. 27, 1972.
